We’re very proud of our talented workforce here at Balconette and to celebrate their hard work we made a short film called #InPraiseOfBritishWorkers.

But when we’d finished filming, we felt that the video wasn’t enough, so we decided to run a competition to celebrate the hidden talents of the great British workforce. We’re sure there are loads of juggling builders, spoon-bending plumbers, tap dancing electricians and ventriloquist plasterers at large in the UK. Not to mention singing shop assistants, castanet-wielding call centre workers and petrol station puppeteers. Everyone has a hidden talent, right?

To enter the competition, just get someone to take a short video of you on a mobile phone and submit it. That’s all there is to it. The video with the most votes at the end of the competition wins a holiday for two to Las Vegas with a whopping £1,000 to spend! Anyone over 16 working in the UK is eligible to enter (for full Terms & Conditions, please visit the competition page).

We’ll be updating our Facebook page regularly with news of the competition, along with a page we’ve set upespecially – #InPraiseOfBritishWorkers.

So, don’t be shy and share your hidden talent with us. It could be you and a friend swanning off to Las Vegas…

Grand Designs Live 2015 at Birmingham’s NEC proved to be another very successful event for Balcony Systems with high levels of enquiries keeping the team busy on the stand throughout the four days.

Strong interest was shown by self-builders, as well as architects and building professionals, in the company’s market-leading range of clear glass and aluminium balustrades, affordable Juliet balconies and stunning curved sliding patio doors that transform all types of properties.

Many enquirers also brought along plans for their own ‘Grand Design’ to discuss quotations with Balcony’s staff. Visitors also welcomed the opportunity to see the balustrading and curved doors at first hand, as well as pose some interesting questions!

‘Is your glass balustrading suitable for a koala bear enclosure?’ was one of the more unusual queries received by the sales team.

“Of course, the answer’s yes!” explains Balcony’s sales consultant Bill. “Because our glass panels are wider than the marsupials’ arm span used in tree climbing, they can be safely constrained by the clear balustrade. With no clamps or clips holding the glass in place, there is nothing for koalas to cling onto, plus they get a great view!

“The glass is easy to keep clean and no silicone is needed, making the balustrade an ideal choice for this novel type of project,” adds Bill, who is following up the ‘bear’ facts with the enquirer.

Balcony Systems was the most prominent balustrading company at the show, demonstrating that its balustrading, curved patio door and decking solutions are suitable for a wide variety of projects – whatever their size.

More than 217 metres of glass balustrading supplied by Balcony Systems has transformed this apartment block following the completion of a major refurbishment project, Cardinal Court in Worthing. It took the residents two years of painstaking research into the specification of their new balustrading.

Tony Foster, Chairman of the residents’ management committee, said the old balustrades, constructed of a concrete ‘shell’ with a half inset glazed panel to the front, were getting ‘tatty’ and needed upgrading.

“These balustrades had to be painted every four to five years and as scaffolding was required to do this job, it was getting expensive,” he explained. “Initially we were just going to get them refurbished and have new glass panels inserted.”

Before the refurbishment

After the refurbishment

Renata from Woodmans construction said: “The new balustrading is sharp, modern and the tinted bronze glass really blends with the brickwork. It looks really nice and lifts the building entirely; the clients are really pleased!”

Tony Foster, Chairman of the residents’ management committee added: “Everything has been very good and very positive. The balconies have been well-received and we are pleased with the result. Even residents in neighbouring blocks have expressed interest, having seen the scaffolding and watched the project progress to completion.”

A spokesman for the Battle of Britain Memorial Trust said: “The Wing is built in the shape of a Spitfire wing, with a central ‘cockpit’ area on the first floor housing a café with unbeatable views out over the channel.

“At 19 metres wide, this is certainly one of our largest curved doors and it looks absolutely amazing!
